Florida homeowners know insurance premiums depend on more than home value. Wind mitigation is a key factor, and its importance is growing.
A new wind mitigation form is coming. Homeowners with recent roof replacements may qualify for savings. Here’s what to know.
What Is Wind Mitigation?
Wind mitigation refers to construction features that help your home withstand high winds, such as:
- How your roof is attached to your walls
- The shape of your roof (hip roofs generally outperform gabled ones)
- The type of roof covering you have
- Whether you have hurricane straps or clips
- The age and condition of your roof
A licensed inspector assesses these features and documents them on a standardized form. Insurance companies use this form to calculate your discounts.
The 2026 Wind Mitigation Form: What’s Changing
The Florida Office of Insurance Regulation has released a revised form, OIR-B1-1802 (Rev. 04/26), effective April 1, 2026. Key updates:
- Effective April 1, 2026 — all inspections on or after this date must use the new form.
- Enhanced documentation is required for impact windows, roof coverings, and roof-to-wall connections.
- Transition period — Citizens will still accept the previous form (Rev. 01/12) if the inspection was done within five years before April 1, 2026, with no structural changes.
How to prepare:
- Gather permits or invoices for recent roof replacements or upgrades.
- Ensure attic access is clear for inspectors.
- Have proof that windows, doors, and garage doors are impact-resistant or shutter-protected
Tip: Confirm your inspector is familiar with the new requirements before scheduling — it can prevent delays or rejections.
Does a New Roof Help?
Yes, significantly. Roof age and condition are among the biggest factors in any wind mitigation report. If you’ve replaced your roof in the last few years and have not had a new inspection, you could be leaving money on the table. Your policy may not reflect the improvements you’ve made.
What Should You Do Next?
- Check your last inspection date. If it has been more than 3–5 years or you have made improvements, it is worth a fresh look.
- Stay tuned for the new form coming April 1, 2026.
- Talk to your agent. Discounts depend on your specific policy and carrier — we can help you understand exactly what your results mean for your premium.
